Zeitgeist - pre and post Analogue

The 'Wild at Art' art exhibition embraces the vivacity and vibrance of the city that comes alive within a different context, amidst the hustle and bustle of Art Basel 2024. For its second occurence, we celebrate the many wonderful expressions of artists between India and Switzerland, through paintings, drawings, installations, sculptures, digital artworks and performances at Atelier Mondial, in the midst of the Centre for the Arts in Basel.

The exhibition reflects the techno-spirituality of the Zeitgeist or 'spirit of the time', pre and post analogue, amidst a heavily digi-centric world. With sentiments of new and old, we show harmonies and anomolies between two significantly contrasting multilingual and multi-ethnic nations. Switzerland with its small ecology of ecologies, distributed over mountains, lakes, industrious landscapes, remains a land-locked island, in the midst of the European Union. We juxtapose it with the largest tech-savvy democracy in the world, which last year superceded China with its human capital, being itself a sub-continent, rich in resources, with great mountains, deserts, forests, plains and seas. Since India's independance from the Brexiteers (now governed by a prime minister of the diaspora), India has gone through many remarkable transitions at break-neck speeds, offering multitudes of innovations, whilst being instrinsically interlaced with ancient lore.

Eastern philosophies are based on the principle that desire breeds sorrow but with the ever increasing populations, do we have a choice ? Have we come far beyond natural law, leaving simple thoughts and simple calculations behind ? Are we devoid of beliefs, magic and mysticisms ? There are so many transformations, catalysed by boundless thoughts and desires, processed by algorithms, generating exponential entropies, as we feed vast databases through gateways and cookies, with insatiable appetites, monstrous quantities of digital content are devoured across the globe, on a secondly basis. Are all the expected and unexpected outcomes necessary ? As a result, has the struggle for existence finally become easier or do the benefits of digitisation limit and challenge us even more, leaving uncontrollable and unmanageable collatoral impacts ?

Are we helping or damaging ourselves, in the pursuit of a higher state of liberation or are we living well beyond our existential needs ? We may need to switch off with the energy crisis but can we actually switch off ourselves ? Who leads and who follows ? Have we become subordinates to the tools ? Can we go beyond and overcome ourselves ? Can we jump over our own shadow ? HumAnimal or machine ? Human BEING or machine ? Have nature walks and talks become evermore crucial to our existences ? Can we uncouple ourselves from machines or are we bound forever ?

What is our position as individuals and place within our societies ? What would the great Mahatma say about all this ?
